Chens Sans
A variable grotesk typeface
Chens Sans is a variable sans serif typeface inspired by grotesque typefaces with numerous customization options, stylistic sets, and ligatures.
Contents:
With a simple and neutral yet characterful design, it features a 'monoline' structure with evenly wide strokes and low contrast.
When designing it, I was very clear that I wanted a functional yet fun-to-use typeface and to take advantage of OpenType features to have a highly programmable and adaptable font.
Thanks to its variability, Chens Sans typeface adapts to your needs:
- Variable in weight and thickness: Allows you to control the weight or thickness exactly as needed.
a
- Variable in display/text mode: Lets you vary the openness of the letters, from more closed shapes for display to more open and readable forms.

Brutalism was an architectural trend that emerged after World War II, and in the 1960s and 1970s, it spread throughout the world. The development of brutalist architecture was greatly influenced by post-war avant-garde art. The greatest impact on brutalism was exerted by such avant-garde trends as art autre, art brut, and musique concrète. Architects were most inspired by the works of such artists as Jackson Pollock, Jean Dubuffet, Pierre Schaeffer, Eduardo Paolozzi, and Nigel Henderson. The main aim of the research was to identify and characterize the most important ideas and principles common to avant-garde art and brutalist architecture. [...]

What is a Sans Serif Typeface?
Sans serif typefaces are distinguished by the absence of serifs, those small finishing strokes at the end of letters. This typographic style conveys cleanliness and modernity, making it a popular choice for contemporary designs.
What is a Grotesque Typeface?
The term "grotesque typeface" is one of the oldest sans serif designs. It originated in the 19th century and refers to the early versions of sans serif that were derived from an Egyptian type but with serifs removed. The term "grotesque" reflects the typeface's departure from the more decorative and ornate styles of the time, aiming to be functional and legible without compromising visual impact.
Grotesque typefaces are characterized by their geometric shapes, straight lines, and lack of embellishments. In contrast to the elegance of serif typefaces, grotesques bring modernity and simplicity to a design.
Grotesque fonts often feature low contrast, and while they were once considered quite straightforward, they now come in an impressive variety of weights and widths, ranging from fairly neutral designs to those that blur the lines between grotesque, neo-grotesque, and other sans serif categories.
Main Features:
- No serifs
- Geometric or rational design
- Low contrast between thick and thin strokes
- Oblique instead of italic
